The brief
Ropion and Bruyère built it as a minimalist three-note composition: jasmine sambac for the floral, cashmeran for the woody amber, white amber as the structural base — Mugler's stated brief was 'a fragrance from another planet'.
Name'Alien' — Thierry Mugler's deliberately extra-terrestrial framing, sister concept to his 1992 Angel.
Why it mattered
- Used jasmine sambac at unusually high natural-absolute concentration; defined the late-2000s 'solar amber' direction in feminine perfumery.
The flacon
Purple-tinted gem flacon with metallic claws holding the bottle like a precious stone, refillable at Mugler 'fountains'.
Footnotes
- Alien is widely cited as the most successful Mugler launch after Angel; by the early 2020s it was the second-bestselling women's fragrance in France.
The Curator's Note
Mugler asked for 'another planet'; Ropion handed him jasmine sambac at almost-illegal concentration.
