The brief
Jean-Paul Guerlain composed it after a horseback ride at Rambouillet, drawing on leather, tobacco and the trail of the rider.
NameHabit Rouge ('red coat') refers to the scarlet jackets of traditional French equestrian hunt riders.
Why it mattered
- Widely cited by Guerlain and perfume historians as the first ambery oriental fragrance composed for men
The flacon
Heart-shaped 'Coeur' flacon adapted from Guerlain's 1908 L'Heure Bleue bottle, presented in red-orange juice.
Footnotes
- Habit Rouge is often described as the masculine counterpart to Guerlain's 1925 Shalimar, sharing its bergamot-vanilla 'Guerlinade' base.
The Curator's Note
Shalimar for men, made for the kind of man Shalimar made nervous.
