The brief
Conceived as a herbal, almost medicinal counterpoint to the sweet florals dominating the era, in keeping with Clinique's dermatologist-led brand identity.
NameLaunched in 1971 as Clinique's first fragrance, marketed as an aromatic 'elixir' rather than a traditional perfume.
The flacon
Tall slender frosted-glass column with rounded shoulders and a small gold-tone dome cap, the deep amber liquid visible through the matte glass.
Footnotes
- Aromatics Elixir was Clinique's debut fragrance and celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2011.
- Bernard Chant's signature was the patchouli-mossy chypre, also visible in Cabochard (Grès) and Aramis.
The Curator's Note
Bernard Chant's third leather chypre, the one Clinique used to invent itself as a perfume house.
