The brief
Inspired by the life of Napoleon Bonaparte, with blackcurrants sourced from Corsica (his birthplace) and birch tied to the Louisiana territory once under French rule.
NameNamed to evoke 'advent' and conquest, released to commemorate the House of Creed's 250th anniversary.
Why it mattered
- Established the modern fruity-chypre masculine niche, drawing buyers who treat batch codes like vintage wines on enthusiast forums.
The flacon
Flask-shaped flacon with rounded shoulders; the clear upper half engraved 'CREED' meets a dark textured wrap on the lower half, with a small cream rectangular label bearing a galloping horse-and-rider emblem.
Reformulated · 2020
Post-2020 batches drew sustained online criticism for reduced longevity and a thinner birch facet. Aventus has spawned an entire enthusiast culture organised around batch codes and dupes.
Cause · IFRA restriction on Lyral (hydroxyisohexyl 3-cyclohexene carboxaldehyde)
Footnotes
- Won Basenotes' 'Best Ever Men's Fragrance' award in 2013.
- Olivier Creed credited Aventus's success with funding the brand's Madison Avenue flagship boutique.
- Post-2020 batches drew online criticism for reduced longevity, frequently linked to IFRA's restriction on the aroma chemical Lyral.
The Curator's Note
Built an entire forum culture around its batch codes. The fragrance came second.
