Editorial notes

  1. 01

A leather chypre Madame Grès said reminded her of long empty Indian beaches at dawn, with sharp morning freshness over warm sandalwood.

  2. 02

Bernard Chant's first leather chypre. He would reuse the same structural skeleton six years later for Aramis, and again twelve years on for Aromatics Elixir.

  3. 03

The original flacon was deliberately pharmaceutical: a plain flask with a grey ribbon, designed by Madame Grès to minimise launch costs.

  4. 04

Composed by Bernard Chant in 1959 around galbanum, geranium and tobacco over a leather-patchouli-oakmoss base. The name is French slang for 'stubborn'.

The brief

Bernard Chant composed it to evoke long, empty Indian beaches at dawn — Madame Grès' favourite landscape — over a stubborn leather chypre base.

Name'Cabochard' — French slang for 'stubborn' or 'headstrong', matching Madame Grès' description of her own character.

Footnotes

  • Cabochard predates Bernard Chant's later signature chypres (Aramis, Aromatics Elixir); each carries the same patchouli-moss-leather skeleton.
  • The original bottle was deliberately pharmaceutical — a plain flask with a grey ribbon — to keep launch costs low.

The Curator's Note

Bernard Chant's first leather. Forty years of his career followed from this bottle.
