The brief
Bernard Chant composed it to evoke long, empty Indian beaches at dawn — Madame Grès' favourite landscape — over a stubborn leather chypre base.
Name'Cabochard' — French slang for 'stubborn' or 'headstrong', matching Madame Grès' description of her own character.
Footnotes
- Cabochard predates Bernard Chant's later signature chypres (Aramis, Aromatics Elixir); each carries the same patchouli-moss-leather skeleton.
- The original bottle was deliberately pharmaceutical — a plain flask with a grey ribbon — to keep launch costs low.
The Curator's Note
Bernard Chant's first leather. Forty years of his career followed from this bottle.
